International's Rare Posters Auction in NYC will Feature over 400 Lauded Lithographs and Maquettes

The posters and preparatory works feature rare and iconic images from a century of poster design. The auction will be held online and live at the PAI gallery in New York City, at 11 am Eastern.

International's Rare Posters Auction in NYC will Feature over 400 Lauded Lithographs and Maquettes

New York, NY, USA, July 2, 2024 -- Poster Auctions International will hold their 93rd Rare Prints Auction on Thursday July 11th in New York, featuring rare and famous images from over a century of design for posters, including Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernist, Contemporary prints as well as maquettes decorative panels and original works of art from these periods.

Public viewing will continue through July 10. The auction will be hosted both live at PAI's gallery located at 26 West 17th Street in New York City as well as online on Posterauctions.com starting promptly at 11:15 am Eastern time.

Jack Rennert, President of Poster Auctions International Inc, expressed his excitement with this month's auction collection as well as its selection. Items up for bid include rare works that have never before been published along with popular designs that have been loved for over 100 years!

The auction will open with 13 designs created for Levi's jeans by Ida van Bladel at Young and Rubicam Agency in Belgium, including their iconic "bare butt" image and whimsical illustrations of artwork (estimates range from $1,200 to $2,500). Fashion enthusiasts are sure to be impressed by these breathtaking pictures (estimates vary between $1,200 to $2,500).

The next auction will showcase 21 historical and Modern aviation posters, from 1909's Une Semaine d'Aviation/ Denhaut by an unidentified artist (estimated between $6,000 to $8,800) to Boris Artzybasheff's Pan Am / Bermuda poster from 1949 (estimated between $4,000-$5,000). There will also be several fun styles of posters related to Pan Am and Air France that are up for auction.

18 bicycle models will also be auctioned off, such as William H. Bradley's 1896 Victor Bicycles from Overman Wheel Co (estimated between $17,000-$20,000), Francisco Tamagno's Terrot & Co / Dijon by Terrot (estimated between $2,000-$2,500), as well as photos taken by O'Galop for Michelin in 1912 & 1913 (estimates between $1,400-$1,700).

Car enthusiasts will have plenty to look at during this exhibit: 20 excellent posters will be on display, including Clarence Coles Phillips' 1912 Flanders Colonial Electric (estimated between $3,000-$4,000), Pieter Vanderhem's ca. 1920 Spyker-Auto's (estimated between $5,000-$6,000), as well as 1932 Robert Falcucci Monaco Grand Prixs (estimated between $17,000-$20,000).

There will be 34 War & Propaganda posters up for auction spanning World Wars I and II as well as beyond, such as Charles Livingston Bull's Army Air Service poster from 1917 (estimated between $1,700-$2,000); James Montgomery Flagg's 1944 Purchase Extra Bonds/Jap Next! the Next! (estimated between $1400-1,700); Jean Carlu's 1942 Production (estimated between $1400-1,700); four Photos taken by Tomi Ungerer during 1967 (estimates between $1,000-1,700); plus various anti-Bolshevik designs created specifically by Tomi Ungerer during 1967 (ests between $1,000-1,700), among many more interesting pieces from World War I through II.

One featured collection contains 14 pieces by James McMullan, most designed for performances at Lincoln Center. All the posters are signed by McMullan himself and many include preparatory maquettes (estimates range from $1,200 - $3,000.)

At this auction are numerous notable artist collections available for purchase, including thirty works by Leonetto Cappiello--one being thirty photographs that belong to him from 1902 onwards that are up for grabs including 1902 Pur Champagne/ Damery-Epernay(est $4,000-$5000), 1901 La Caisse Simon/ Huitres Exquises(estimated at $10,000-12,000) as well as 1905 Fleur des Neiges/ Biscuits Pernot and Creme de Luzy (1909 both available 3-sheet layouts; 1909 Creme de Luzy also on sale (estimated between $5,000-$6,000). Finally 2 original sketches featuring dancing artists dating from 1928 are up for auction (estimated between $3,500-4$4,000).

As always, Alphonse Manya was an iconic figure of Art Nouveau through his luxurious photographs. Some of his most renowned works include 1899's Plume et Primevere (estimated at around $17,000 to $20,000.), 1902 Cycles Perfecta (estimated between $30,000-$40,000), The Etoile de Polaire from Claire de Lune panels from this series The Stars (estimated between $8,000-$10,000 and $7,000-$9,000 respectively) as well as 1999 Moet & Chandon/ Cremant Imperial (estimated between $17,000-20,000.) as well as 1902 Precious Stones or La Topaze (estimated between $17,000-20.)

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was one of the greatest artists of Belle Epoque. At auction he will offer 19 works including 1895 L'Estampe Originale (estimated between $70,000 to $90,000) and his 1897 Partie de Campagne (estimated between $70,000-$90,000.) Also up for bid is 1896 The Chap Book (estimated between $30-$40000), along with 1999 Jane Avril (estimated between $50,000-60,000.)

Other noteworthy highlights from the turn-of-the-century included in this auction include an original proof signed by Pierre Bonnard's Salon des Cent (estimated at $12,000-$15,000), Henri Gabriel Ibels' 1897 Pierrefort/ Affiches Artistiques by Henri Gabriel Ibels (estimated between $10,000-12,000), Johann G. van Caspel's 1899 De Hollandsche Revue by Johann G van Caspel (1899, estimated between $17,000-20k), Privat Livemont's 1896 Absinthe Robette (1896 Absinthe Robette by Private Livemont as part of De Hollandsche Revue (1897, estimated between 17,000-20K), Edward Penfields 1896 Western Lawn Tennis Tournament which Edward Penfield produced; Walter Schnackenberg 1912 Odeon Casino which cost between $25-30K as well as his Deutsche Theater which costs around 8-10K while Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen's Motocycle Comiot from 1899 is estimated between 25-30K).

There will also be plenty of Art Deco posters for sale; this auction boasts an exquisite collection. Some highlights are Chesley Bonestell's 1930 New York Central Building (estimated value: $6-8,000) and Roger Broders' 1930 Chamonix Mt Blanc / Sports d'Hiver poster by Roger Broders (estimated value: $1000-$1250). Emil Cardinaux's 1920 Palace Hotel/St. Moritz (estimated at approximately $12,000-$15,000), Jean Carlu's 1926 Aquarium de Monaco (estimated between $8,000-$10,000) and A. M. Cassandre's 1936 Simca (estimated between $12,000-15,000). Edward M. Eggleston also created an estimate for circa 1935 Pennsylvania Railroad/ Atlantic City by A. M. Cassandre in 1936 (estimated between $12-15,000). Charles Loupot's 1928 O Cap / Pour les Cheveux is estimated to fetch an estimate of between $8000-10000; Leslie Ragan's The New 20th Century Limited collection from 1938 is valued between $6000-8800; V. Tschetschets 1913 Olympic Games in Kiev collection stands out among these items with estimates ranging between $5,000-6K.
